SSC GOLDEN RULES:-

Rule 1:  Singular subject ke sath singular verb aur plural subject ke sath plural verb ka use kiya jata hai.

  • Singular subject – he, she, it, everyone, no one, something, someone, singular and uncountable nouns, etc.
  • Singular verbs – is, was, has, does, verb + s/es, etc.
  • Plural subjects – you, we, they, plural nouns, etc.
  • Plural verbs – are, were, have, do, first form of verb.

Examples:.

    • Kunika live in Delhi.(Wrong)
    • Kunika lives in Delhi.  (Right)
    • The monsoon have in/ the past five days retreated /from most parts of the country .(has)
    • Aachal have emerged as the/ new President of the Aanchalacademy/ after a night long discussion.(has)
    • Neha go to the school /every day irrespectiv/e of the weather.(goes)
    • Rescue officials was/ unable to find any/ survivors in the /California boat tragedy.(were)

Rule 2:  Subject aur veb ko alg krne ke liye aksar unke beech me preposition phrase, infinitive, relative clasue, participles, etc. ko laga diya jata hai to ese me apko dhyaan rkhna hai ki VERB hamesa subject ke according hi aati hai.

Examples:.  

  • Everything that I like to eat are fattening.(is)
  • The simplest way to get proper recognition are through doing things with dedication and sincerity.(is)
  • The strain caused by the difficulties and anxieties were more than she should bear.(was)
  • Lack of required vitamins and minerals lead to several complicatoins in the human body. (leads)
  • The inflow of foreign portfolio funds into Indian equities have pushed up price earning multiples and valuation.(has)
  • The crowd across the bridge are very furious.(is)
  • There was not only the students but also the teacher.(were)

Rule 3:  Jab ‘and’ se 2 Nouns ko joda jata hai :-

Case 1. Divide

d sense (Alag cheezen)    

N1 and N­2 (Divided sense)  – Plural verb

Such as : water and fire, poverty and development, time and tide, etc.

e.g . Poverty and development goes hand in hand.(use. go instead of goes)

Case 2. Unified sense (Ek sath milke)

N1 and N2  – (United sense) – Singular verb

Such as : The dance and music, soda and whiskey, sum  and substance, rice and curry, horse and carriage, age and experience, drinking and driving, slow and steady, honour and glory, bread and buter, etc.

Eg. Slow and steady win the race.(wins)

Hint : agar Article ya possessive case 1 baar ho tab verb singular aati hai, agar 2 baar ho tab verb plural aati hai .

Case 3. Each/ Every + N1 and N2 – singular verb

Examples:.  

  • Every man and woman have to participate.(has)
  • I want to thank each and every person who have contributed to this project.(has)
  • Time and tide waits for none.(wait)
  • Bread and butter are our usual breakfast.(is)
  • Every man, woman and child in the class have been given a pair of glasses with coloured lens to watch the 3D movie.(has)
  • The poet and the author is awarded by the president.(are)
  • The famous author and actor are being honoured at a function today.(is)

Rule 4:

  1. Everyone, Someone, Anyone, No one
  2. Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, Nobody
  3. Everything, Something, Anything, Nothing
  4. Each, Either, Neither, None, Any

Upper diye gaye Pronouns ke sath singular verb aur singular pronoun/determiner ka hi prayog kiya jaata hai.

Examples:.  

  • Somebody has forgotten his key on the table.
  • Somebody needs to be here to greet the late arrivals.
  • Each of the students of my class is very intelligent.(CPO 2019)
  • Everyone has to join health orientation classes before going for trekking.(CHSL 2024)
  • Either of the two supervisors was supposes to be present at the site.(CPO 2019)
  • Each of the pictures has been singed by the football star.(CHSL 2019)
  • She asked whether either of the brothers was at home.(CHSL 2019)

Rule 5:  ‘All/some/any’ agar ye sentence ki starting main aate hai tb verb ka prayog unke baad prayog huye noun ke anusar kiya jata hai.

  • Some/ all/ any + Plural noun – Plural verb
  • Some / all/ any + uncountable noun – Singular verb
  • Some / all/ any + singular noun – Singular verb
